55+ Communities on the Peninsula

Choosing a GREAT Senior Lifestyle!

By: Diana Rondinelli

Looking for a place on the Peninsula where everyone is “at the same place in life”?  If so, you will find  several alternatives for 55+ living that will fit the bill.

One of the most popular neighborhoods designed around that concept is the Villas.  With very few exceptions, these homes are one story residences.  Roomy, and designed to easily accommodate senior  living, they offer the best of both worlds ~ a carefree lifestyle and close proximity to “everything.”   There are several Villa neighborhoods ~ in Yorktown there is Rainbrook Villas, Shady Banks, and Villas at Yorktown.   In the quaint city of Poquoson, Oxford Run is the place to be.  The Villas are built by a National firm – and each neighborhood offers similar floor plans and options.

If you have decided you REALLY want to take it easy – there are several retirement homes and assisted living facilities.  As an example, “The Chesapeake” offers Continuous Care – from spacious apartments and cottages to an Alzheimer unit and nursing home.  It is a wonderful facility that has that “cruise ship” feel.  Sound like the place for you?  Be prepared for gourmet dining, swimming pool, fitness room, library, and gift shop.  And there is more!

Warwick Forest is another great retirement home in Newport News.  Again, the spacious apartments and cottages are top-of-the-line.  There is even a Bistro and beautiful well-manicured grounds.  You can just sit back and relax or travel to your heart’s content.

Other than neighborhoods designated as 55+ communities, there are many subdivisions suitable for senior living – with first floor master suites and one or two stories.  Windward Towers in Newport News, overlooking the James River is another great option – beautiful condominiums with gorgeous sunset and river views – and, of course, elevators.

Basically, the Peninsula has much to offer its senior citizens – comfort, convenience, and, of course, location, location, location!
